Works created en plein air

“En plein aire” is a term coined by the impressionists to describe the act of, simply, painting outside. It is how an artist learns to observe how light interacts with the earth and all that it contains. The intensity of light, shadows, the atmosphere created by their relationships, and many more visual riddles are solved by painting and drawing what is seen outside. This is where most of my paintings, even the most abstract, find their beginnings. The visual aspects of the landscape are not all that is captured; the artist actually “experiences” the landscape in a way far more intimate than taking a snapshot would.
